Job description
Job Summary:
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting a variety of laboratory tests, experiments, and analyses to assist with diagnosis, research, and quality control. Working under the direction of senior lab personnel or managers, the Lab Technician ensures that specimens are processed accurately, tests are conducted according to established protocols, and results are reported timely. This role requires technical skills, attention to detail, and adherence to laboratory safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Specimen Processing: Prepare and handle biological specimens such as blood, tissue, urine, and other fluids, following established procedures for preservation and testing.
• Testing & Analysis: Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests, including but not limited to chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses. Use laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, and automated analyzers.
• Data Recording: Accurately record test results and observations in the laboratory information system (LIS) or other databases, ensuring data integrity and traceability.
• Quality Control: Monitor and maintain quality control standards throughout testing processes. Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments, ensuring they function properly and meet compliance standards.
• Safety Compliance: Adhere to all laboratory safety guidelines, including the proper handling of hazardous materials, disposal of waste, and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Equipment Maintenance: Clean, sterilize, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments to ensure a safe and functional working environment. Troubleshoot minor equipment malfunctions.
• Inventory Management: Monitor laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment. Inform supervisor of shortages or equipment needing repair or replacement.
• Collaboration: Work closely with other laboratory staff, pathologists, and healthcare providers to support diagnostic and research efforts. Communicate test results or anomalies to senior personnel.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all laboratory procedures, tests, and results. Assist in preparing reports for review and analysis.
Qualifications:
• Education: High School Diploma or GED
Skills:
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment and test procedures.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in handling specimens and data entry.
• Basic knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory safety protocols.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
